Council eyes Iloilo River preservation on top priority

ILOILO CITY – The preservation and revival of the Iloilo River remains a top priority of the Iloilo River Development Council (IRDC) after it was established that 120 barangays out of total 180 city barangays here drain its sewage at the river.

The problem was aggravated by 30 other barangays from nearby towns of Leganes, Oton and San Miguel, Iloilo which also drain its sewerage at the river.

“The problem is alarming, considering that the river, although an estuarine of the Iloilo Strait and arm of the sea, is now known as the biggest septic tank in Iloilo,” according to city environment and natural resources officer, Engr. Noel Hechanova .

“Not only that. The river is fast dying due to heavy pollution and siltation, if we do not do anything to save it from man’s slaughter,” the CENRO said. Read more »

PLCPD enjoins Ilonggo writers to join pop-dev media awards

ILOILO CITY – The Philippine Legislators’ Committee on Population and Development (PLCPD) Foundation Inc. is enjoining all Ilonggo writers to participate in the 5th PopDev Media Awards and be heard on what they think of the population issue in the country and in their respective community.

If chosen as winners, the Ilonggo writers will join the crop of best writers in the country who joined the annual popdev media contest since 2005.

Maida Ojeda of PLCPD said the contest is open to all print, broadcast, online, photo and citizen journalists nationwide. PLCPD is campaigning for entries from the Visayas and especially from the Ilonggo journalism community to participate and be heard.

Entries must deal with population and human development issues such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), public health especially reproductive health, reproductive health policy and governance, economic growth and poverty, climate change, housing and urban development, sustainable development, environment, education, gender, maternal health, adolescent reproductive health, family planning, food security, reproductive rights, migration and population ageing.

For the print and online category, awards will be given for Best News Reportage, Best Opinion or Editorial Piece, Best Investigative Report and Best Feature or Magazine Article. Read more »

Guimaras government focuses efforts on ‘agricultural tourism’

ILOILO CITY — A program funded by the Canadian government aims to spur “agricultural tourism” on Guimaras Island.

Guimaras Gov. Felipe Hilan Nava said the provincial government has identified agricultural tourism as the most appropriate and marketable concept to develop the tourism industry of the island.

Mr. Nava said they noticed that most tourists visit Guimaras for a farm experience, aside from buying agricultural and food products.

“Agri-tourism may include visits to coastal and fruit farms, pick your own fruits on roadside stands and orchards, farm bed and breakfast, agricultural festivals and fairs and even food processing facilities. Visitors will not just buy and eat our mangoes, they will also learn about our agriculture sector,” Mr. Nava said. Read more »

DILG, CIDA to launch LGSP-LED in Guimaras

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) will launch the Local Governance Support Program for Local Economic Development (LGSP-LED) in the province of Guimaras on June 2, 2009.

DILG Undersecretary Austere Panadero and May Wong, First Secretary for Development of the Canadian Embassy are expected to grace the occasion, which will be held at the Guimaras Trade and Information Center, Guimaras Provincial Capitol in Jordan, Guimaras.

The Guimaras launch signals a series of similar activities that will be held in three other provinces – Bohol, Pangasinan, and Zamboanga del Norte – and will culminate in the national launch on June 22 in Metro Manila.

LGSP-LED is an eight-year collaborative project of the Governments of Canada and the Philippines that will support provinces and local government alliances reduce poverty by strengthening local governance and supporting sustainable local economic development. Read more »
