City gets 100 PGMA scholars

ILOILO CITY – This southern city was allotted 100 scholarship slots in the President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s Scholarship Commitment for a two-month training on short courses such as small engine repair, massage, spa therapy and baker.

The scholars, selected by the Liga ng mga Barangay here, will receive P60 daily allowance for transportation, meals and cash allowance. The scholars will also be assisted in looking for employment after their graduation or may be given P5,000 capital assistance in starting up a business.

On the other hand, a memorandum of agreement was signed March 10, 2009 for the launching of Bagong Hanapbuhay 2009 integrated livelihood assistance program spearheaded by TESDA Director General Augusto Syjuco, Filipino Hairdressers Cooperative (FilHair) headed by Ricky Reyes, the city government headed by Mayor Jerry P. Trenas and the Department of Social Welfare and Development in providing a training program and livelihood opportunity for out-of-school youths, underemployed adults and displaced overseas Filipino workers in this city.

Reyes leads in the search for the Fastest Haircutter in Town competition and seminar held at the Robinson Place Iloilo with the aim of selecting local hairdressers to compete in the national contest slated on May 12, 2009. Reyes said the activity is expected to put the Philippines in the map of Guinnes Book of World Records.

The program was started in Metro Manila last year in partnership with Marikina Mayor Marides Fernando, honorary chairperson of the Metro Manila Mayors’ Spouses Foundation in giving livelihood opportunity and training of home grown entrepreneurs.

Reyes will also be giving an additional 200 slots for Iloilo City on his program Isang Suklay, Isang Gunting training program in cooperation with FilHair Iloilo Chapter.
