GTZ extends P4.7M to MIGEDC
THE GERMAN Technical Cooperation (GTZ) extended a P4.7 million grant, under its Cities Development Initiative for Asia (CDIA), to boost Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Economic Development Council’s (MIGEDC) urban management capabilities.The grant will be used for the preparation of a pre-feasibility study for an Ecological Port at the Rotary Park near the wharf; the preservation of heritage buildings and revitalization of the economy at the city’s central business district in downtown Iloilo; and to conduct capacity building of MIGEDC staff and local government units.
Mayor Jerry Treñas said the grant will help MIGEDC address certain issues such as the transport system from Iloilo to Guimaras Island and vice versa.
Also, he said, the preservation of downtown Iloilo’s heritage buildings will enhance the city’s image as a tourist destination, and revitalize its economy.
Dr. Emiel Wegelin, CDIA program coordinator, said this city is the first beneficiary of the CDIA in the South East Asian region.
CONCEP Inc., which has been a partner of Iloilo City since 2001, shall be the consultant of the project expected to be done in the next six months.
CONCEP Inc.’s Arch. Nathaniel von Einsiedel said the eco-port could be best ventured with a public-private partnership arrangement. The pre-feasibility study shall prepare the groundwork for the needed study to establish demand/market for area, he added.
For heritage conservation, Einsiedel said incentives will be given to owners of heritage structures.
